Conflicted Yet Creeped Out

March 30th, 2010

People say some pretty weird shit to me all the time. Some of it is rather creepy. Some have witnessed this creepy during my Geeky Pleasures radio show. Some of these peculiar comments and questions make it to formspring. I also have made a strict “not going to censor” people comments that they may leave, either here or on my Geeky Pleasures website as I have moral and ethical objections to that kind of censorship. I live in a pretty censor-free country and my views are shaped because of this. I say some pretty controversial things, I expect my right to free speech to be respected and I give people the same leniency, even if their opinion, thoughts, questions, etc., do not mesh with mine or are mean. Because like I’ve said, I have said some pretty mean things especially here on my personal blog.

But today somebody overstepped into new realms of creepy. A comment is currently waiting for my approval on my Geeky Pleasures website and I just don’t know what to do with it. It takes creepy to a whole new level and I feel a little gross after reading it. Most people are telling me to just delete it and report the guy. He has not broken any laws though, he has just made me feel a tad bit violated and gross.

And here is where I become further conflicted. The guy who left the comment lives in the same town that I do. Whenever anybody leaves a comment, I get their IP as well as a whois entry for that person. The dude lives in the same neighbourhood as I do. This bothers me greatly especially as I have had stalkers in the past and have one now. Had the comment been left by someone not local, I would probably have let it through without a second thought. But I am afraid if I let it through, it would be encouraging the person. I am afraid if I don’t let the comment through, I will be looked at like a hypocrite.

A lot of people are saying “delete it”. One person even said “report him to his ISP”. Well he hasn’t really done anything wrong besides be a creepy person and cause me to be a little paranoid and worried. Maybe I am overreacting but past experiences tell me that my reaction is normal considering the close proximity of this person. Or maybe I am giving myself too many airs and am creeped out and worried over nothing. Maybe this person thought they were being funny. Maybe I am over reacting. Maybe I should let it through and respond telling him that his comment is creepy and not appreciated. Maybe that will encourage more comments though. There are a lot of maybes and this is further cause of conflict.

Conflicted yet creeped out Jules is conflicted yet creeped out.

Let's Play A Game

March 17th, 2010

I want to play a game. I wonder how many of you will take the time to respond here instead of on Twitter. As normally I don’t care if people comment regarding my blogs on Twitter instead of on here (which is the majority and some occasionally on Facebook) this game won’t work if people respond on Twitter as the majority of my readers do not use Twitter. So yeah, it would be cool if you played this game with me here and took the time to respond in the comments below.

I am curious about something today. People tell me often that I have an odd idea of sexy. What I find sexy as a whole is far from the norm. It is rare that I find the norm sexy. I find the norm to be boring and meh and it doesn’t do anything for me unless I can see the personality traits which cause me to find someone sexy. For me it isn’t about appearance even though there are physical traits in people that I do find very appealing. Often I get met with reactions of “really?!?!” when I say someone is sexy. Now I know I’m not alone here. I am sure a good sample have people whom they find sexy where others say “really?!?!” because it is not the “typical” idea of sexy or beauty as portrayed in magazines and Hollywood.

To give examples of what I mean, the well known fact that I find Shatner and The Hoff extremely sexy if only for their innate fromage but they also have a certain charisma that I find appealing (even so their egos greatly repulse me). But even more so, would be Steve Carell and Tim Curry. They have to be two of THE sexiest men on the planet, seriously OMG SOOOO SEXY!!!

So yeah, please play this game with me and share. If you don’t, I understand. I’m just in a very curious mood today and figured this would be the best place to share instead of on Facebook or Twitter.

Roger Ebert Tweets Out Of His Ass

March 2nd, 2010

There seems to be a lot of things in this world that get me fired up. When I try and put one word that seems to link all of these seemingly different issues that cause me to rant quicker than c, that word would be ignorance. Being a nerd/geek/gamer, I face a lot of it. The entire community does and it really chaps my behind to put it nicely. I’m happy to report that my children do not seem to face the same sort of discrimination as my generation does and even worse, the generations before mine. However it still exists and it really needs to end, especially when this ignorance and discrimination comes from main stream media sources. If what is said was being said about Blacks, Jews, women, gays, Hispanics, Asians, Muslims (insert any other group that has a tendency to be largely discriminated against), the outcry would be deafening. So why are people like Roger Ebert allowed to continuously perpetuate a very negative stereotype regarding this topic. Case in point, his latest tweet:

You know what, I will be the first to admit that as a group of people, we can be an odd bunch. We like to argue the minutia of pretty much any subject that is the object of our obsessions and compulsions. We like to dress up in funny costumes and attend conventions where we unleash our geekiosity upon an unwitting city. We are a very passionate bunch of people and we will allow our passions to be spilled upon any poor unsuspecting person if given the opportunity. We may not always be the most socially graceful people but we have heart and we care deeply. We are willing to stand behind our beliefs despite rampant criticism from our peers.

But I want you to think about that for one minute. How are we any different from the “jocks” who attend their favourite sporting event dressed in team colours and faces painted, screaming and hollering from the stands? How are we any different than that same group of people spending hours debating over the merits of The White Sox vs. The Yankees? How are we any different than any group of people who attend any event in support of whatever it is that gives them that boost of adrenaline.

Ebert made mention of messy pigs. Have you looked into a frat house or looked in the home of the bachelor jock with their beer cans, pizza and take-out boxes, piles of clothes and miscellaneous debris all over the place? The geeks/nerds I know are way more obsessed with order and cleanliness that any other group of people I know. Maybe their gaming areas are not always the tidiest and I know that my desk always looks like it has exploded but I do not know of too many creative types where their creative space is not a complete hazard.

Apparently we smell too. That is a stereotype that really bothers me because again the group that seems to hate us the most (the jocks) have the exact same issue. Especially when it is down to play-off time and they wear their same lucky jersey for weeks on end without washing because it will ruin the luck. And let us not forget about the gross and disgusting play-off beard-o-luck. I have met some pretty stinky gamers in my time. There is no denying that but I will deny that the image of the lone gamer in his/her mother’s basement is far from the norm. It is a very unfortunate negative stereotype.

And now for screaming at the PC. Are you trying to tell me that is not a common occurrence? Because let me tell you something, it is no different than the testosterone-filled group massed together in the living room or bar, hooting and hollering over every single little thing that happens during their all-worshipful game. Are you trying to tell me that because it is being done in a pack it is more acceptable or are you telling me that because it is coming from the “cool kids” you are willing to overlook this same behavior?

Now let me tell you something about geeks/nerds/gamers. There seems to be a lot of press about violence and us. And the odd occasion that it does happen, it is shameful. But our instances of violence are not nearly as prevalent as one would like to believe. I will admit, we can be huge assholes to each other online. We have been known to troll the internet just waiting for the opportunity to allow our words on the screen to cause someone else to cry. We have been known to rage quit and some are even known to get a sick perverted sense of satisfaction when they know they are the cause of this rage quit.  But I do not think I have ever heard of a group of us destroying a city when our team has lost. I do not think I have ever heard of us ever getting into physical fights with someone in a bar or in our homes while we are drunk and someone says some stupid shit about our team. As a general rule, we are a very non-violent group of people who just like to anonymously run their mouths from time to time. It bothers me that you never hear about the dude who beat up his wife or the kid who went on a shooting rampage after watching a movie, reading a book, looking at a picture, attended or watched a sporting event (many more examples can be put here) but music and gaming seem to be two of life’s awesome things that like to get singled out because of agenda and not because it is the real cause.

I have nothing against jocks. The only reason I am using them here is because that is the group that is stereotypically pitted against the nerds. And this is one stereotype that does have a good basis of fact behind it unlike the stereotypes that people like Roger Ebert like to fart out of their asses and post on Twitter. When the reality is, if it were not for us geeks/nerds/gamers Roger Ebert wouldn’t be able to fart anything onto Twitter again because guess what, we invented the thing! All of these awesome technological things that people use without a second thought (computers, cell phones, social networking, blogs, intertubes, games, technology to create movies which Ebert makes his life from, engines, microchips, television, bridges, buildings, space shuttles, telescopes, sound mixers, etc., etc., etc.,), none of it would be available if it were not for us. Pretty much every job and every single person’s sources of entertainment would not exist if it were not for some geek spending hours dreaming of how to make something work. I think maybe the only exception to this would be painting as it does not require some type of mechanical device to do.

So Mr. Ebert maybe you want to think about that next time you decide to spew ignorance on the internet. We made it possible for you to still have a voice. You should be thanking us for all that we have given you because without us, you would have no way to hand out your venom.

As The Curtain Draws To A Close

December 18th, 2009

I have said before sometimes thank you is not enough. But I am going to try my best to express the flood of thoughts that is going through me at the moment as I prepare for my final Geeky Pleasures radio show tonight.

I was going to do on air thank you however I have been prone to spontaneous eye leakage all day today and I am afraid it will happen tonight while people not only listen, but worse, they watch.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me for the past year and half while I did my thing at Party 934 | 102.5 FM Hudson Valley NY.

Thank you to everyone who not only allowed me to entertain myself but allowed me to entertain you in the process.

Thank you to everyone who has embraced (as one listener put it) my unique brand of geekiness.

Thank you to everyone who laughed at me while I laughed at myself.

Thank you to everyone who supported and allowed me to feel normal at least one day of the week, as normal as a geek/nerd can feel. This is a big one. My radio shows allowed me to have a few hours a week where I could pretend I was doing something productive and meaningful, and I was not living with Lupus (except for the one time I almost fainted during my show). From the bottom of my heart, you will have no idea how much this means to me.

Thank you to all the people behind the scenes who have laughed with me and cried with me while I went through the roller coaster that is my life. Thank you especially to those who just listened. Those that didn’t try to fix it. Those that didn’t try to compare battle wounds. But those who really just listened and allowed me to feel what I was feeling and let it pass when I was ready to let it pass and not when they wanted it to pass. If it were not for your support, I don’t think I would have been able to maintain my normal level of insanity. It would have spiraled into something not as fun.

I hope that sometime (sooner rather than later) I can find a way to make Geeky Pleasures live again in some audio format where we can all come together and geek out in real time with the world. Being able to geek out with people from all over the world in one place and allow the world to listen in is a truly unique and special thing. You are what made it happen. Without your input, without your contributions, without your own unique brand of geekiness it just would not have been as awesome as it was.

Thank you.

So Long, Farwell

December 17th, 2009

Apparently I need to blog about this again as some people seem to have missed the memo. And you know, I think that angers me just a little bit.  Consider this my two week notice to the internet.

Two month ago and without warning due to a lack of funding, I lost a contract that made it possible for me to be online, made this blog possible, made my Geeky Pleasures website possible and made my Geeky Pleasures radio show possible. I am an independent contractor and every single dollar I earn is the difference between keeping a roof over my family’s head and food on the table, and being homeless. The contract was not a huge amount by most people’s standards but it is a devastating amount to my family and me. It is what paid for me to do everything else that you see me do. Because even at the radio station, I am an independent contractor and I did that as a labour of love and not because it made me money. The joys of helping start up a new business venture is that you do not always get paid for the work you do even if it is a legit media outlet.

I would have been offline two month ago if I had not borrowed money (which I still feel sick over as I have never been in debt until now) 1 small design project and a donation that helped pay my bills for this month. And let me tell you, I have hated every moment I have put into all of this ever since. I use to do all of this only for my own amusement. Then people told me that I can’t go offline and they love what I do and it can’t go away etc., etc., etc. Well harm fuzzies does not feed my kids, pay my bills, put a roof over our heads or presents under the Christmas tree. My children do not get to have that part of Christmas this year. If it were not for living in wonderful socialist Canada and the help of a couple of friends and food banks, I would have no food in my cupboards at the moment. If it were not for the fact that I qualify for disability and Canada at least has some decent socialist safety nets, I would be homeless come January 1. I think it would be fair to say that I am resentful at the moment. Not so much at the support and kind words, but at the fact as a result I have become an unpaid, debt laden, dancing monkey.

I even gave people options as to how they could help out if they felt so inclined, if they indeed did really care, and I got nothing but more warm fuzzy words that at the end of the day don’t fix the situation even if they are appreciated.

This past weekend I was able to escape for a few days thanks to a really close friend who decided I needed a change of scenery and I needed to be surrounded by people who really care. He kidnapped me for the weekend and thanks to a visit with another friend, I was able to gain a better perspective on the situation. I told her of something I was doing for someone and she asked, “Are they paying you?” “No”, I replied. Then we got to talking about how people expect me to do all this stuff for them for absolutely nothing. And since we do not live in Gene Roddenberry’s future, I am the one that is getting seriously buggered as a result. Honestly, would you do what I am doing for nothing? Somehow I really doubt it yet you all expect me to do it for nothing and then when I say it is going away, you feel you are entitled to get upset over it. Well you aren’t willing to pay for it so I am no longer willing to provide a service for nothing.

My Geeky Pleasures website hosting is paid up for a couple more month. There is a possibility that I can use my landlord’s internet connection to at least maintain that from time to time. But as for the rest of it, it just is not going to happen as I will have no phone, internet or cable come Jan 1. I am not going to put 40+ hours of my week into what I do with no return except for warm fuzzy feelings from the masses and have my family continue to go without as a result. Maybe sometime in the future the rest of it will be revived but until someone is willing to pay for it to happen, my answer will continue to be “it ends here.” I refuse to be a dancing monkey any longer and have people take advantage of the services I provide.

Happy holidays and have a good 2010.

Because Bills Just Don't Go Away

November 12th, 2009

*sigh* Something I have been doing a lot of lately. I am not going to enjoy writing this post and I honestly wish I didn’t have to. Friends of mine have been pushing me for weeks to write it and I keep saying no but now I really do not have a choice.

I don’t know if people realize this or not but I am self-employed which is a huge YAY. I do not have to get dressed to go to work, I have complete creative freedom over what I do, and when I am going through a Lupus flare, I do not have to worry about losing a job because of my health. Being an independent contractor has a lot of bonuses for me. Especially during seasons such as these ones where my doctor has once again decided that I need to be in reverse quarantine and am not allowed to mingle with the general population in order for me to remain somewhat healthy.

This also comes at a huge drawback. If I lose even one contract, then I am completely screwed financially. And this is what happened a month ago and with no warning. It is a temporary loss due to funding restrictions and the contract will become active again sometime in the future, I just have no idea when. This has hurt my pocket book immensely. And I do not have the luxury to find a temporary “real” job outside of the house because of the severity of my Lupus. So this leaves me in a quandary. And because I really suck at pimping myself out, self-promoting and refuse to use “connections” like many have suggested to me, this leaves me with even less options that I feel comfortable with. Even so it bites me in the ass from time to time, I am not the type of person to do things I am not comfortable with, well that is until now. *sigh*

I have been working so hard on so many different projects lately and most of them are finally starting to pay off in one way or another. I wrote last month that I may be going away again but thanks to a generous offer from a friend, I was given a months reprieve. I was hoping in that time I would finally hear back from some potential sponsors of my Geeky Pleasures site and all would be good. Despite numerous emails asking for an update, I still have not heard back from the one I am most excited about and another one said not at this time but we will keep you in mind for the near future. Well shit that doesn’t really help.

Many friends have been telling me I should put a donate through Paypal button on my site. My reaction has been “I am not comfortable with that and I would feel guilty.” They come back at me with some variation of “But Geeky Pleasures needs to stay around. It can’t disappear. It just can’t.” Even so their sentiment is appreciated, I still get taken a back every time someone messages me or emails me telling me how much they appreciate and enjoy both my website and my radio show.

So because bills just don’t go away and I have two children to feed, I have given in. I have become affiliates with a few companies. This means that my Geeky Pleasures site (which I was hoping to keep ad free) is no longer ad free. From time to time I will posting deals from said companies because in return for placing their ads on my site, I get a commission from any sales. One of these companies is Tiger Direct. Also my affiliates page will be updated as more affiliates are added. Once a week, I will be posting their weekly deals and any other promotions that they send me. The two major drawbacks to this are: I worry I may lose readers over this and I do not get paid immediately for said sales. However, if you are looking to make a purchase for say hardware or software for you computer, games or other such things, I would greatly appreciate you check out my website and go through my affiliates if you are so inclined.

My book is also available for purchase. I posted that news on my Geeky Pleasures site but did not do so here. People have been purchasing it or they tell me they plan on doing so soon. This is awesome and I so appreciate it especially since partial proceeds will be donated to the B.C. Lupus Society where the money will be earmarked for Lupus research and treatment. However, just like the affiliates, I do not get paid for those sales immediately either. There is a hold back. And when I decided to finally finish this book, I never intended to make money from it. The purpose was to raise awareness, fundraising, to get a message out and to leave something for my children. If my only reason for it was to make money, I would have gone through a publisher like I was offered. However, I refused their offer because of the reasons mentioned and self-published which may have been a mistake as people are still leery of self-published books. If you are one of those who have already bought my book or plan to soon, my deepest thanks.

And now finally, I am now accepting donations on my Geeky Pleasures site. This decision was the hardest for me to make. However after strong urging from a few individuals and the need for an immediate solution, I am very reluctantly doing so. If I do not find an immediate solution, Geeky Pleasures will be pulled at the end of the month. And I personally feel this would be a shame. The biggest reasons why I think this would be a shame is because of the platform I am able to give independent artists and musicians. Believe it or not, it has nothing to do with me. Also, it has given a platform for other contributors to get their geek on and readers a little hub for many things geek related. I have had many inquiries lately from people asking me if they could contribute on my site and I really want to be able to give them that. I find it awesome people want to take part in it and that it is starting to become a little community. Without any real promotion or advertising of that site, I have had more page views in the first 3 months than Fark had in its first year. I personally feel this to be a huge accomplishment. When Fark started a decade ago, there was little competition. However in today’s world that is not the case. My site is but one in millions upon millions and the fact it is doing so well blows my mind on a daily basis. The feedback I get on a daily basis blows my mind. Every time someone contacts me for an interview through my site instead of through the station or wanting to contribute or just tells me how much they enjoy it and are happy that I am doing what I do, I honestly get a little teary and think “Wow, I cannot believe this is my life!” I just hope coming to this decision does not have the opposite affect and that I do not alienate my wonderful readers. That would really suck. But because bills just don’t go away and I need to fix this until a better, more permanent solution presents itself, it is time for me to “swallow my pride” as one reader put it to me and just do it.

I really hope you understand and thank you for your understanding if you do.

I Have Been Binged And Other News

October 26th, 2009

So last time we spoke, I did not know if I would be here at the end of the month. Thanks to a very generous offer from a friend, I have been given a one month reprieve. Hopefully in the next week or so I hear back from those I am currently talking sponsorship with.

The other night, someone went crazy on my Geeky Pleasures website. Like seriously crazy. I was checking my host stats and I noticed a new visitor. That part is not weird as I get a lot of new visitors per day. What stood out about this visitor is the amount of pages they had visited. And then I watched as in the next hour they browsed 571 pages of my site. I don’t even think my site has that many pages so they were checking things out more than once.

Now the city of the IP address is Santa Clara. Santa Clara is in the heart of Silicon Valley. Santa Clara is also the HQ of one of the companies I am currently in sponsorship talks with. This has me really nervous because I still have not heard back from them since I submitted all the info they were wanting. I hope the fact they (if it is indeed who I hope it may be) browsed 571 pages and didn’t leave after only a handful of pages means they liked what they saw and I will hear something back very soon. And if it isn’t who I hope it is well then maybe something will come out of it. Who knows. Seriously why would anyone browse 571 pages in one sitting?

My book has been published! Holy sheep shit Batman! I got a really nice comment on Wil Wheaton’s blog today (well now technically yesterday) from a fellow reader about my Geeky Pleasures website and how much they like it and have already stuck in their RSS reader, my writing style, telling me I am very talented and they can’t wait to be paid so they can buy my book and telling other people to buy my book and check out my site. It seriously brought tears to my eyes. This book has been a very emotional experience for me. When it became available for purchase on Friday, I couldn’t stop shaking or get rid of this feeling of nausea. It is very personal to me and for a cause that is near and dear to my heart.

Even so I do things because I like them and I don’t care what other people think, in this case I honestly can say I do care because it is of such a personal nature. I just hope people enjoy it and don’t feel they wasted their money. The other things I put out it doesn’t bother me if they don’t like it because it has taken no investment on their parts to consume it. They can either come on the ride with me or not. This is different. This is not just about me, it is about my children and raising money for Lupus research. I hope its good.

The fact my book is now published has me thinking a lot about my relationship with my boys lately. I was overhearing Kid2 once again going on and on about how cool I am and you could hear the pride in his voice. The same goes for Kid1. I think it is awesome they think I am cool and speak about me with pride. It also makes me teary. I feel so blessed I have such a close relationship with my boys. I did not have that with my mother.

She was not a good parent by any stretch of the imagination and it does not help that she has severe mental illness. People who do not understand what I went through growing up like to say to me “she is ill, you have to realize it is the disease talking and not her.” This really bothers me. I have my degree in Psychology so I do understand it is part of the disease she has. But she chooses to not get treatment and stay crazy and with her illness, it one of the few where the person suffering has an active part in recovery. She has decided to not get treatment.  She has decided to not get better. She made the choice to not have me in her life. For the longest time I hoped and I prayed I could have a real mom. That when I spoke of my mom I could be proud of her and not be ashamed. I gave up on that fantasy a long time ago. So yeah, it really means so much to me that my boys not just love me, but like me.

Tonight was another moment that I decided needs to go into the remember for always always category. It was a brief moment. I asked kid2 if he wanted to watch a movie with me and cuddle. He said sure. So we watched a movie I hate and he loves and cuddled for two hours. After it was done I said to him, “Thank you for watching a movie with me and cuddling. I know how difficult it must have been for you.” To which he replied, “Yeah cause it’s like child abuse.” We both smiled and he resumed watching his shows and I resumed trying to assimilate all that is going on in my life at the moment into some sort of logical thought process.

I wish I could understand Bing. Ever since someone decided to use my Star Trek MMO review as a lure to infect people’s computers with a Trojan, I have been doing vanity searches to make sure that any mentions of articles I have written actually do indeed link to my site. I search both my name and Geeky Pleasures. Some months ago, I made a geekypleasures.com domain at a friend’s suggestion. I forward that domain to my Geeky Pleasures site and it is the name I give out on air when telling people about my site. I have never submitted this domain to any search engines as it is a redirect.  Well Bing has decided to list it in search results for Geeky Pleasures. Bing has also done one better. They have given my site and me a new title.

According to Bing geekypleasures.com is Geeky Pleasures with Jules the Awesome. No where in my meta tags, site title, site name or site description meta tags, no where on my site does it say anything about Jules the Awesome. Seriously, how does Bing come up with these things? I had to giggle at it. Then I decided to do a search on Yahoo (something I never do but figured what the hell. Does anyone still use Yahoo?) and they have followed suit by calling me Jules the Awesome. However, at least they have a site description underneath that lets people know its a redirect to juliasherred.com.

So should I sign all my posts now “from Jules the Awesome?”

I am not serious, I just think it is funny and it was kind of an ego booster when I needed it.

Would You Like A Side Of Entitlement With That?

September 29th, 2009

There are some things I will never ever understand and or get use to. And I hope I never do get use to them. Days like my last 5 days, I wonder why on earth I bother doing what I do. Everyone wants a little piece of whatever and when I give them what I can, it is not good enough and they complain. There has been many instances the past few days concerning many different things, but there is one major one that has me the most pissed.

And to make it even worse, they do it behind my back and act like bloody trolls. I spend 10+ hours out of my FREE TIME to make available things I do not have to. This is my time and I choose to give it to others. I am even nice enough to take the time to explain this. To tell them you know, if you don’t want to hear a conversation or put up with some blips, maybe you will not want to listen. You would think they would be thankful that it was made available because I could say “You don’t tune in, you don’t get to listen. Suck it up and next time… Well maybe there won’t be a next time you ungrateful gits!”

To make it worse, I have to hear about it through other channels. They don’t even have the balls to say a damn thing to my face. They just complain that they should be getting more. And then when someone offers to clean it up a bit, that isn’t even good enough because again, they want more and fuck that the more they want breaks a million and one copyright laws. No, that doesn’t matter.

I am not your fucking dancing monkey. Others are not your fucking dancing monkeys. You are not entitled to a damn thing from me or anyone else. I do this out of generosity. Just because it can be made available doesn’t mean I have to. I even give permission to share it, which I do not have to because I own the damn copyright! Shut your damn pie hole or at least have the balls to say it to my face instead of behind my back in a forum that I cannot even reply to so that I can tell you to your face to shut your damn pie hole! At least here, it is open and I will not censor my comments or the comments of others who choose to reply, good or bad.

Busy Busy

June 16th, 2009
I have been so extremely busy the past few days with a number of projects that I haven’t been able to find to update here. And for that I am sorry. The main project that has been keeping me busy is building my personal website. There are many reasons for this need. Here are but a couple:

  1. I have so many different interests and things on the go, that this blog is very inadequate for me to be able to share just a minute fraction of what catches my interests during the day.
  2. Even if I were to blog a bunch of little blogs during the day, something would end up getting lost. As well, I am afraid that if I were to blog a bunch of times during the day, it may annoy some. I know it would annoy me over time even if it was something I was very much interested in. And the content would get quickly buried and difficult to retrieve later.
  3. I feel that finding content of interest on this blog for those who may be searching for something specific can be difficult to locate (see 2). Blogger is not set up in a fashion where everything can be streamlined in a nice and functional way without setting up multiple blogs and an endless number of sidebars and gadgets.
  4. I do not like the layout of blogger or the functionality of blogger. It may have been useful at one point in time, but things have evolved and blogger has not kept up.
  5. With the growing popularity of this blog, it is time to move onto something more streamline and efficient.
I will still be blogging, but it will be from the blog page on my personal website. This blog will still remain as a sort of archive and for people to continue to read and search as they see fit. There will be a link to this blog on my new site.

When I started to build the site, I knew that I could only include a small fraction of my interests as they are so varied. I have broken it down into 5 main categories and even with just the basics, there is still going to be a lot of content and hopefully something of interest for everyone. The categories are as follows:
  1. Blog
  2. Geek
  3. Art
  4. Interviews
  5. Music

The blog section is pretty much self-explanatory.

The geek section will feature: “Geek of the Week”, this is the main geeky thing that has caught my eye during the week; and “Other Geeky Things of Note”, this will be a myriad of things that are of a geek nature that I enjoy. It could be any number of things ranging from gadgets to movies to websites etc. As well on my main page I will have “Geek Kudos of the Day”. This will be just a quick snippet of something geek that caught my eye on that day.

The art section will be a mix of photographers, artists, crafters, writers, etc., that I enjoy. I will have a featured artist on my main page and then the art section be more in depth with a number of great artists for people to enjoy. As well, I will be featuring some of my own artwork and crafting projects.

The interview section will be your one stop place to listen to interviews I have done and will continue to do for Party 934.

The music section will be a sub domain of its own. There people will be able to find most of not all the independent artists that I love and whom I regularly feature on my radio show. As well, on the main page of the parent domain, there will be a featured band/musician of the month.

As well there will be links to other places to find me on the web, blogs that I frequently read and a few links to sites that I find of note.

I will also have an about page and a contact page with a number of ways to contact me depending on what your need is. If you are an artist, geek, crafter, musician, writer, etc. and would like to be featured, let me know. If I like what you have to share, I would love to include it on my site.

I am hoping that this will all be ready to launch by the end of the weekend at the latest. If not all completed, then at least have a majority of it completed. The site(s) will be updated daily (depending on content) so once it is done, I hope that you will visit it and visit it often. If this blog goes quiet over the next couple of days, please understand I am very much distracted at the moment.

I Never Thought I Would See The Day

June 8th, 2009
Having to write this blog feels very very strange. Right now my brain is going “huh” for lack of a better expression. It is such a strange phenomena and it is all so surreal right now. I don’t even know where to begin right now because as the title says, I never thought I would see the day. Now I hope anyone who is reading this does not get the wrong idea. I have to do a little bit of history first before this makes any sense, if it will make any sense. Right now, it doesn’t make sense to me. This is just something I have been having to deal with recently and it has been causing some confusion.
Let me back up a bit. When I got into the entertainment industry it was because I have a passion. I never thought that my name would become known in any shape or form. I thought that I could do what I love and share what I love with people in a somewhat anonymous fashion. Maybe that was a tad bit naive of me. I thought I could share my love for music, blog about random thoughts and events in a quiet fashion and geek out with fellow geeks about topics of mutual interest and stay under the radar. After all there are hundred of people out there that do the same thing that I do and seem to be able to do that.
Now I also have many other hats that I wear. And for some people, it can be a bit confusing how I am able to manage and juggle all of these spheres. They are all separate aspects of my life yet still make up part of the whole. It is quite the understatement to say that I am a very complex person with many different layers, many different things that I am really passionate about. My many vast interests has certainly made it difficult to decide what random thing I should blog about since there are so many different things that get me excited during the course of a day. Some have a hard time rationalizing how or why I can believe in one thing and other things at the same time. And you know what, that is their right. The best that I can do is present myself as honestly as possible and allow people to take from it what they will. It is not my job to justify my beliefs beyond stating something as opinion and I respect other people’s beliefs and opinions as long as they are not causing harm.
Now let us jump forward a bit. I have a very rare name. I use to do this thing regularly where I would google my name just to see what would come up. And for years (even so I could be found on the net) nothing came up without having to dig through thousands of pages. And then last year, something interesting happened. I googled my name and found someone else with my name and found them on various networks. I found it interesting that they also used Jules when posting to forums or other venues. I never gave it a second thought beyond writing a short blog about it because really it was an interesting thing (at least to me) given how rare my name is. Never in a million years did I think it may be a source of confusion for people. I took it for granted that if people wanted to find me, it would be simple.
Well now (and believe me this is very surreal) it is an issue. I have had requests on Facebook and have seen that they have requested the other Julia Sherred as well not knowing which is which. I posted a comment on a blog today that I post to regularly and have always been the only Jules that I have been aware of, only to see that after I posted someone else had already posted to the blog using Jules. So I had to clarify that. So now on that blog I am posting as Jules (Julia) hoping that will be enough. All of a sudden a lot of people are searching my name. It is not only me performing the searches. I just find this whole thing so odd.
Now maybe this phenomena will be short lived. Maybe it will go on as I start to interview more and more people and geek out about whatever grabs our fancy. So if you are reading this and have been one of those people who is searching my name, there are links in the sidebar to other places you can find me on the web. Other than that, welcome to all the new visitors that have come across this blog. I hope you come back to it frequently as you never know what topic I will talk about from one day to the next.
